Nikki Gurley & Jenny Shannon from PATH will lead a Learning Event on creating qualitative data visualizations. Qualitative data can be incredibly rich and meaningful but is often difficult to condense visually, leaving reports plagued by paragraphs full of quotes or word clouds that don’t convey a clear message. This demonstration presents creative ways to visualize qualitative data succinctly and powerfully to engage audiences in qualitative findings. In this demonstration we will walk through our design process and how we design and craft qualitative visualizations. Using case studies from three projects, including a multi-site qualitative study and a longitudinal qualitative study, we will present a selection of qualitative visualizations from: spectrum displays to repurposed quantitative visualizations like Sankey diagrams. Participants will come away inspired with new ways to visualize and present qualitative data, and with tips and tools to guide their qualitative visualization design process.
